In a class last spring I had a couple of Lebanese-American students, cousins, who mentioned they would be spending the summer with relatives in Lebanon. When the fracas broke out there in July, I thought of them and hoped they were OK. This morning while waiting at a campus bus stop at the start of a field trip for one of my classes, a black van pulled up and out walked both of them. I wasn't particularly close to these two, but I was still very glad to see them.
The field trip, by the way, was with my "river class" to a local metropark. Despite hiking in light to moderate rain, the students seemed to enjoy themselves, and I'm sure most of them learned something about our watershed.
So I have two extra-ordinary occasions for thanksgiving today and it's barely noon. Who says Mondays have to suck?
