Today, one of my students wore a T-shirt with the message "Ohio: Nothing to see since 1803." Unfortunately, it's just about the truth, at least in this part of the state. Of course, Ohio's taxpayers support me, so maybe I shouldn't poke fun.
Still, it's not altogether bereft of natural attractions. This region hosts a number of rare butterflies. It seems to be a haven for endangered wildflowers, too. Northwest Ohio doesn't offer much in the way of grandeur or picturesque appeal, but some it has some captivating minutae. I've met a few people with a deep knowledge of and attatchment to the area. I think their bond to this place bespeaks an admirable perceptive capacity.
