Australian environmental philosopher Val Plumwood was attacked by a crocodile while canoeing through a national park in Australia about 20 years ago. She survived, but sustained grave injuries. I recently found a link to an article she published about the experience in 2002. She tells a riveting story, interspersed with reflections about the place of humans in nature and the frameworks of understanding through which we view predation and our own eating habits. The piece gets a little theoretical at points, but even those points are accessible and provocative.
I think the article makes a nice appetizer for the mind prior to our annual expression of gratitude via gluttony.
