Laying Low

Every have one of those weekends when you can't bring yourself to do much except eat, sip wine, read, and watch videos? When going out of the house sounds like too much effort? I'm wrapping up one of those. That mellow vibe I felt Wednesday has degenerated into full-blown sloth. I have gone out a couple of times (to buy wine, for a long walk Friday, and to jog yesterday), but that's about it.

I suppose I ought to be grateful that I have the space to chill out a bit, but having been raised with an expectation that every waking moment should be productive, I suffer guilt pangs about too much relaxation. Even about going fishing, sometimes.

But the lazy streak is at an end. Though the fog and cold rain outside aren't invigorating in the least, there are a few household chores that I can't put off any longer, and classes to prepare for tomorrow. Fortunately, I have put together some plans for class, albeit at a lesiurely pace. In my fiction class, for the last two weeks of the semester I'll be teaching Carl Hiassen's Double Whammy, a crime thriller set in the world of high stakes bass tournaments. Needless to say, making notes about that book has triggered some daydreams of floating around the edge of a lake on some midsummer night, casting a popper toward shore and listening for a small explosion in the darkness.
