Let's not make it a habit...

Not going to have time to fishblog today, but I will quickly relate what has to be the best excuse for an absence I've ever heard. Monday, a girl came up to me before class and apologized for not being in class the previous Wednesday. "I would have been here," she said, "except I was dead."

She had come down with pneumonia, she explained, and went into cardiac arrest as a result of that. "I was home sick on Wednesday, she said, "then the next thing I knew I was waking up in the ICU on Friday, and the nurse was telling me I'd been clinically dead for a few minutes." She even had a note from the doctor stating as much.

It was a bit of a struggle to maintain my professorial deadpan, but I managed, temporarily. "Thanks for letting me know, Amanda," I replied. "I had been worried you dropped the class." There was an awkward silence, then she started laughing and I did too. Then with what sounded like genuine concern, she asked if she could make up the assignment the rest of the class had done over the weekend. What did she think I'd say? "Sorry, young lady, but if you're going to play hooky in the afterlife, you can jolly well face the consequences!"
