Basket Case

The trip to Ohio wasn't all beautiful hills 'n dales. On the way to my grandfather's farm, you pass the Longaberger Basket Co. headquarters.

It cleverly compliments their business, yes, but it's an eyesore, clashing totally with the georgic surroundings. The handles are the most garish aspect. When you cross the bridge over the river heading to my grandfathers, you can see this building if you look upriver, framed by ashes and willows. Kind of kills the scene.

Nearby, Longaberger has a quasi-theme park, kind of a touristy shopping center. On its grounds stands the "Crawford Barn."™

This was actually built by my great-great-grandfather for his horse-trading business. Longaberger took it down and reassembled it plank by plank on their site to house a deli and some shops. Better than another giant basket, I guess. But it's weird to see a bit of your family's history trademarked, and used as a marketing tool for pricey baskets. As it is being preserved, I probably shouldn't complain (preservation may well have been the motive for the Crawford's donating the barn). Go Longaberger!
