Huron River 6/6

Last night I fished a little upstream from where I did Tuesday.  Didn't miss any early action last night,  though.  Waded in around 7, just a few golden drakes and sulfurs around.   Lots of caddis too, but as usual, they fluttered around unmolested.  Took one smallmouth on a swung soft hackle early, then went fishless for over an hour.  I had some more short strikes on the soft hackle, as well as on an ephoron I tied on when I started to see those just before 8.

By 8:15 or  so a fair push of golden drakes started, but not much was feeding on them--or, to be precise, not many fish were feeding.  But the barn swallows were out in force, streaking over the water and dipping down to pluck bugs from the surface, sometimes sending up big splashes in the process.  It was quite a show.  I did see just a few fish rise, none consistently.  Not having any golden drake patterns, I tied on a #16 sulfur spun a bit on the chubby side and managed one 12" bass with that.

After the drakes tapered off, I began wading upstream toward the access.  Along the way ephorons started to gather, and they were thick by the time I got there.  Saw one riser and threw a dun to it, hooked it on the first cast.  Taped it at 12" when it came to hand.  As I released it I saw another feeder near the far bank.  Took a few casts to get the distance right in the near dark, but once I did the fish took immediately and it would turn out to be the best of the night at 14".   The river was quiet for a while then and I decided to hang it up, but saw another rise near where I'd taken the 12er.  Cast to it around 10 times before it took, but it did, and measured a healthy 13".

I drove home happy.
