The Michigan Natural Resources Comission has proposed steep price increases on hunting and fishing licenses. My all species fishing license, for instance would rise from $28 to $40. My $15 small game license would cost $20.
The rationale is to increase funds for outdoor programs at time when the legislature is unwilling to. Provided the money actually goes for habitat improvement and law enforcement, and a few other critical needs, I'd say, great. Let's do it. Michigan hunting/fishing licenses have been cheap relative to other states, and we certainly do have big shortfalls in the Natural Resources budget. And even at the increased prices, a fishing license has to be one of the best entertainment values on earth. I can think of very few investments that give me a greater return on my money.
