FTR Election Analysis

As you may have guessed, I'm generally happy about yesterday's election results. I think the democratic takeover of the US House--and, still possibly, the Senate generally bodes well for the issues this blog discusses with regularity, those concerning the environment and public lands.

In Michigan, Gov. Granholm (D), who had support from the Sierra Club and other environmental organizations, won reelection. Her opponent, Dick DeVos, had stated intentions to loosen restrictions on industrial farms, which would have risked serious harms to waterways. With her generally strong environmental record, it's good to see Granholm continuing in office. And Senator Debbie Stabenow (D), too. Hopefully this time around she can make a little more headway on blocking Canadian trash shipments.

Also, Democrats took over the Michigan State House. That should, among other things, generate more friction to those proposals to sell off parks and other state lands that crop up regularly.

And speaking of public lands...out in California, Congressman Dick Pombo (R) was thrown out of office. Pombo has repeatedly advocated the selloff of federal lands, especially in the West. He won't be missed.

Tomorrow, I'll be enjoying some of those public lands, hunting somewhere north of Saginaw Bay. I'd hoped to make it a two-day venture, but my workload has nixed that. Actually even a one day trip may be inadvisable, but if I don't go now, I won't get out again until December, as bird season closes during the gun deer season, which kicks off Nov. 15th.

Hopefully I'll have some good stories, pics...and stews!
