I went down to the Huron at Island Park again today. Got on the water about 7:30, stayed two hours. Fishing was slow at first, which came as a surprise. I did catch one decent smallie after about 20 minutes (olive WB), then hooked into a carp that made a looooong run before snapping the leader. It is nice to see the backing once in a while. After that, a few more rockies and smallmouths, including one smallie of 14". That would be my best for the year.
A few fish were smacking bugs on the surface, maybe the caddis that were dipping down to the water occasionaly. I switched to a floating line and tried skittering caddis and stonefly imitations in the quieter water. Caught a small bluegill and one very nice rockie--a little over 7". No hits by bass as far as I could tell. Need to return there with poppers.
I think I'm going to start going to the Huron at least two or three mornings a week, trying different stream sections and different tactics. That may put me as close to my fly-fishing fantasy life as I'm likely to get for the time being. Sometimes when non-anglers hear me pining away for more stream time, they cluck their tounges and remark that if I got to fishing all the time, I wouldn't enjoy it as much. They could be right, but I want to test the theory for myself. Maybe this would count as the "research" I always tell my colleagues I'm going to do over the summer.
