This is the image on the card I received this morning from Ave Maria Gallery announcing an upcoming exhibition of Inuit art. My kind of stuff. While I like realistic, representational wildlife art, I'm more drawn to that which explores people's cultural, emotional, or spiritual connections to wildlife and nature, especially through more abstract, mythologial, or oneiric perspectives. These realtionships don't lend themselves to precise formulations, and I think Native American artists often explore them in interesting ways. Others who do are Michigan-based artist Lad Hanka, who I own a couple works by, and my friend Todd Marsee.
Ave Maria Gallery, contrary to likely impressions, does not specialize in religious art. I've been there a few times, and I'm not sure I've seen any. It is located in the Domino's Farms complex, which was built by former Domino's Pizza owner turned conservative Catholic activist Tom Monahagn. There are several Marian-themed operations there. Surpisingly enough, to me at least, AMG is a good place to look for fine nature and wildlife art. If I had more cash at my disposal, I think I'd be one of their best customers.
