Trout Opener 2012

Yesterday, I opened my official season on a small southwest Michigan creek I fished often in my grad school days, but certainly didn't reenact any scenes of past openers there.  Caught plenty of trout...15, 20?  Didn't count after a while, and didn't find the haul especially satisfying.  All of them were browns, 7-9", probably straight from the stocking truck.  I actually planned to keep some, but that stream is now a type IV, making the minimum keeping size 10".

I used to take nice fish from that stream, and could always count on  a  few in the teens.  There were a lot of rainbows in there too.  Stocked, yes, but they did offer some variety.  I don't know if the stream is on some decline or not.  Probably won't investigate further.

Despite my complaints, it was still an enjoyable morning. Fish that size (and most were at the upper end of the range) still will put a bend in the rod, and I would take such a morning over a skunking anytime.
