I Wonder if He Caught Something?

This week's news has included reports that madams of two busted brothels identified Louisiana Senator David Vitter as a former client. I'll leave it to the political bloggers to discuss how this testifies to the corruption and hypocrisy of today's Republican party; the element of this story that caught my eye was this bit from a report in the New Orleans Times-Picayune:

U.S. Senator David Vitter visited a Canal Street brothel several times beginning in the mid-1990s, paying $300 per hour for services at the bordello after he met the madam at a fishing rodeo that included prostitutes and other politicians, according to Jeanette Maier, the "Canal Street Madam" whose operation was shut down by a federal investigators in 2001.

Like some other readers of Talking Points Memo, where I first came across the story, I want to know exactly what a "fishing rodeo" is and why it involves prostitutes. It could be the participants are angling for something other than fish. After all, who wants to bother with petty distractions like sex when they're actually fishing?

The first time I read the article, I thought one of the lines said "politicians and other prostitutes." Not the case, but it would have been a choice morsel of ambiguity, and entirely fitting.
