The Grip of Winter

This could make a friendship go sour:

(The Minneapolis Star-Tribune) A 44-foot wooden cabin cruiser locked in ice on the St. Croix River might have to stay there all winter, a Wisconsin conservation warden said Friday.

The boat was moored at Beer Can Island at Hudson, Wis., when it broke loose and floated 4 miles downriver to Troy Township, said Paul Sickman, a St. Croix County warden for the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.

It was the result of a misunderstanding between the owner and a friend, Sickman said: "Each thought the other took care of it ... then they didn't call each other about it."

I hope the pressures of shifting ice don't crush his boat over the winter. Reading this, I feel even happier about having a boat I can deflate and keep in my basement. I also feel curious to know the origins of the name "Beer Can Island." It could denote carefree bachanalian festivities or years of accumulated litter. Or both.

Things will probably be a little quiet here for the next few days. Loads of papers to grade and final grades to tally. And, of course, Christmas cards to mail. If we learn anything from the case of the icebound boat, it's the importance of staying in touch.
