Heading East

Early in October, I'll be attending a conference in Vermont on environmental service learning. I'm hoping it will give me some ideas about the environmentally-themed classes I'm developing, and am looking forward to hearing some of speakers. The timing of the conference is perfect for catching fall colors, but naturally I've set my sights on catching fish while I'm out there. And I'll have help.

When I was in the American Studies M.A. program at Bowling Green State, I met a guy from New Hampshire by the name of March who also liked to fly fish, and actually focused his program on material culture of the outdoor sports, writing a thesis on the first female fishing guide in Maine. We hung out during good part of the two years we were there, made a few fishing trips into Michigan, and have kept in touch since graduating. Once I knew I was heading east this fall, I got in touch with him about meeting up, and it appears we'll do it in grand style. We'll be getting a cabin on the Upper Connecticut river, where fishing for brook trout and landlocked salmon should be going strong, and spend a day before the conference fishing. We should be more or less in the spot in the photo above.

Probably no hunting or fishing for me between now and when I leave. But the prospect of this outing makes that seem more tolerable.
